Toshi Hirata, Chairman - JACOS
Toshi was appointed Chairman of JACOS in June 2017. Toshi is a Managing Director of JAPEX and President of CANOS, the Japanese subsidiary of JAPEX in Tokyo which holds 100% of the shares of JACOS. Originally from Japan, Toshi was seconded to Petro-Canada from JAPEX as a Senior Reservoir Engineer as part of the PCEJ Consortium in 1988. From 1990 to 2005 he held various positions in the areas of Reservoir Engineering (JACOS), Technical Management (CANOS) and Executive Management in both Technical and Operations (JACOS). Toshi served as President of JACOS from 2005 to June 2017. He has over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, with over 25 years focused on oil sands research and development.
Toshi holds a Bachelor of Mineral Science and Technology degree in Engineering from Kyoto University in Japan.
Satoshi Abe, President - JACOS
Satoshi was appointed President of JACOS in June 2017 after holding the position of Executive Vice President which he began in July 2013. He has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He is a member of the Board of Directors of CANOS, the Japanese subsidiary of JAPEX in Tokyo which holds 100% of the shares of JACOS. Prior to joining JACOS, Satoshi served as General Manager of Canada Oil Sands Project Department and Executive Secretary Department of JAPEX successively. He was also involved in North America and Central Asia projects of JAPEX and served as Treasurer of JAPEX (U.S.) Corp. in Houston. Satoshi started his career in human resources and developed his general administration and project coordination background thereafter.
Satoshi has a Bachelor of Economics degree from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo.
Michiro Yamashita, Managing Executive Officer - Accounting & Finance, JAPEX
Michiro joined JAPEX in 1982 and has been working for the company ever since mainly in the areas of accounting, finance and corporate planning. His recent assignments include Executive Director for the Sakhalin project (2008-2010), Deputy Head in the Environmental Ventures Division (2010-2012), Deputy Finance Director (2012-2013), and Executive Officer in charge of Finance & Accounting as well as Advisor to the President of the Asia and Oceania Division (2014-2016). He was appointed to the Director of JACOS in October 2012 and Managing Executive Officer of JAPEX in June 2016.
Michiro received his LL.B. from the University of Tokyo and MBA from George Washington University
Masaki Ogihara, President - INPEX Gas British Columbia (IGBC)
Masaki joined Indonesia Petroleum, Ltd. (precursor to INPEX CORPORATION) in 1983 and has been working for the company ever since mainly in the areas of exploration and new ventures development in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Masaki started new venture development in North America in 2010 and was Vice President of INPEX Gas British Columbia (IGBC) in Calgary from 2012. He was appointed President of IGBC in 2016 and a Director of JACOS in April 2017.
Masaki holds a B.Sc. in Geology from Waseda University in Japan.
Waleed Jazrawi, Managing Director - Jazrawi & Associates Inc.
Dr. Jazrawi has over 35 years of diversified oil and gas experience in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, 26 years of these with Esso/Exxon. He served as Division Manager of Esso's Production Research and Technical Services with focus on transitioning the Cold Lake heavy oil steam recovery project from pilot to commercial. He also served as Esso's Production Executive for several heavy oil pilots in Athabasca and also as a member of Syncrude Canada's board of directors and management committee, representing Esso. Dr. Jazrawi also served as Vice President of Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management with Quantel Engineering and also as President and General Manager of Nexen Inc. drilling and production operations in Yemen. He also served as Senior Advisor to EnCana Corporation on the long term reservoir management plan for the CO2 EOR Weyburn project. Dr. Jazrawi is also a director of and senior advisor to Pan Orient Energy which has extensive heavy oil assets and a soon to be implemented pilot operation in Sawn Lake, Alberta, as well as exploration and production operations in Thailand and Indonesia.
Dr. Jazrawi holds a B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, both from the University of Birmingham, UK, as well as a diploma in Technology Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta, Canada, is a three-term president of the Project Management Institute, Alberta, is a past director of the Canadian Heavy Oil Association and a past member of both the Editorial Board and the Publication Board of the Canadian Journal of Petroleum Technology.
Patrick Maguire, Partner - Bennett Jones LLP
Pat is a professional lawyer qualified to practice in the Province of Alberta. He earned his BA and LLB from the University of Alberta and his MBA from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. He is the co-head of the Bennett Jones LLP corporate department and a member of the firm's energy practice group and acts for energy companies on a broad range of commercial transactions, both in Canada and internationally. He assists energy companies with purchase and sale transactions and almost all aspects of energy project development, including joint venturing, commodity processing, transportation, sales and related transactions. He also assists borrowers in structuring and negotiating full and limited recourse financing arrangements for oil, gas and electricity companies. His MBA dissertation related to risk management and financing of international energy projects not only provides an educational background for his practice but also provides a significant understanding of decisions from a business perspective. He has contributed to Butterworths' Canadian Oil & Gas Law and has co-authored papers for the Canadian Energy Law Foundation, Insight Information seminars, Alberta Law Review, Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation and others. He has taught oil & gas law at the University of Calgary and an international course on gas sale transactions. Pat is a board member of the Canadian Energy Law Foundation and a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
